Statement by Secretary of Labor A. Herman
"American workers had two significant victories today: The efforts
to block OSHA's proposed ergonomics standard and the move to partially
repeal Davis-Bacon were both defeated."
The article goes on to suggest the Administration is committed
to address the 600,000 workers who suffer disabling musculoskeletal
disorders each year and are backed by medical and other communities.
It states OSHA is being urged to move forward quickly with an ergonomics
standard.
On the other hand, Senator Bond's amendment to the LABOR-HHS appropriations
bill would have required OSHA to delay publication of its proposed
ergonomics standard until the National Academy of Sciences completes
a second literature review.
The prudent decision on the part of an ever increasing overhead
of corporate America would be to review the further studies of the
National Academy of Science. Protection of the American work force
is important. Protection of American business is important to offer
a place for the work force to work. Third world countries working
for cents on the dollar create an ever increasing threat to move
manufacturing off shore. Let us influence, if we are able, the control
of regulations and laws in a way that is realistic and healthy for
all parties.
